Sophie Smith Fund
Honouring Sophie
For more than 10 years, funds raised in Sophie’s name (including during her cancer treatment) amounting to more than $80,000 have been granted to The Australian Cancer Research Foundation, as well as to the Leukaemia Foundation.
Sophie’s family now wishes to acknowledge and honour Sophie’s personal passions as a lasting tribute to the beautiful person she was. Passions which enriched Sophie’s life from a young age included the written word (through reading and writing) and music. Her interest in the words in music/songs we believe stemmed from her sensitive nature and deep understanding and observation of human emotions.
‘A Song for Sophie’ Award
We are thrilled therefore to announce that West Australian Music (WAM), together with the Sophie Smith Fund (held with the Fremantle Foundation) has proudly launched ‘A Song For Sophie’ Award which will form part of the WAM Song of the Year song writing competition (https://wam.org.au/2025/01/29/a-song-for-sophie-award/). This new initiative will honour Sophie’s passions and support the development of emerging musicians in Western Australia. The award is open to emerging musicians aged under 25 years and offers a mentorship program for the winner to spend time with an established and successful songwriter over 12 months to further develop their songwriting capabilities. It is planned that the annual award will be ongoing.
Western Australia has a strong and growing music industry and receives widespread recognition for artists who’ve begun and developed their craft in the State. WAM is Western Australia’s peak music body and has operated the Song of the Year songwriting competition since 1989 alongside (the State Government’s) Healthway, to support its Act-Belong-Commit message through the competition by encouraging songwriters to reflect on the relationship between music and their mental health, and the benefit of living the message. Applications open on 3rd February 2025 and winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony in June 2025.
It is hoped that the Sophie Smith Fund will endow ‘A Song for Sophie’ Award well into the future.
